It is hoped that car crashes in Madison and St. Clair County and especially semi truck accidents will be decreased by taking away yet another form of distraction for drivers on the highways and streets of Illinois.

After having banned texting while driving, Illinois will soon become the first Midwestern state to impose the hand held cell phone ban. Violations may have fines of $75 to $150.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill into law on Friday, August 16, 2013 and it will become effective January 1, 2014. But bill sponsor John D'Amico, D- Chicago, admits there may be a lack of scientific evidence supporting his belief that suing hands free cell phones is safer than hand held phones.

Most states that ban drivers from using hand held phones are on the East and West coasts and the District of Columbia.
